About the African American Trailblazers Educational DVD Legacy Project

The African American Trailblazers Educational DVD and curriculum is a Richmond Region 2007 legacy project that was created as a part of America’s 400th anniversary commemoration. The project highlights the historic contributions of African Americans since the first Africans arrived in Jamestown in 1619. The purpose is to provide documented scholarship on the African American Trailblazers (AAT)in an entertaining and SOL user-friendly format targeting 4th and 5th graders throughout the Commonwealth as a supplement to the Virginia Studies curriculum. Capital One is the presenting sponsor of the AAT educational DVD legacy project. Dr. Tameka Hobbs provided the scholarship on the trailblazers and Jacqueline Marshall, an elementary school educator, designed the curriculum. The DVD is produced by Emmy Award winning producer Eric Futterman of EAF Communications. In addition, a traveling exhibit was developed in partnership with the Black History Museum and The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities to increase awareness and to further to educate the public about the broad range of contributions by African Americans. This exhibit kicked off at the Black History Museum in Richmond, VA, and travelled to Alexandria, VA, and Newport News, VA during the fall of 2007.
